When coming in to see a NutriProCan dietitian for weight loss, we often measure waist, hips, thighs and other body circumferences. We do this as many clients are looking to ‘lose inches’ and we will set goals with clients, but usually we look at waist circumference as a primary goal.
This is because fat accumulation around our mid-section is more tied to health, and by losing inches around your waist, you can reduce your risk of various chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We typically set the goal of achieving a waist circumference to less than 102 cm (40 inches) for men and less than 88 cm (35 inches) for women.
Everyone loses fat from different parts of their bodies at different rates, with much of this being hormonally and genetically determined. Because of this, there is no ‘norm’ for losing inches.
While everyone is different, we estimate that you’ll reduce 1 dress size for every 10-15 pounds of weight loss.
